03: Data Manipulation UMBC: Spring 2021


About This Course

This course examines and applies data manipulation techniques to prepare data for analysis. Identify how and why data manipulation is important to the role of data scientists and perform data preparation (remove duplicates, recoding, filtering, and formatting) on a provided dataset. Apply analysis techniques on prepared data set using Pivot Charts and summarize data with Pivot Tables.

At the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Perform basic data manipulation and exploration using appropriate tools and software, including use of key Excel functions*
  • Create and edit simple data structures and storage*
  • Detect and remediate missing, miscoded, and anomalous data*
  • Explain the purpose of and code conditional logic statements*
  • Use a computer application to manage large amounts of information*
  • Implement common information retrieval and filtering applications in databases and data systems*
  • Find and access publicly available datasets*8.Conduct ad hoc analysis (summarize, estimate, predict data, use pivot tables)*
