About this Course

This training is designed to inform British Columbia Prescribers and Pharmacists about the modernization of the Reference Drug Program (RDP) how it may impact PharmaCare coverage for patients and to provide them with the evidence and tools necessary for safe, effective and economical prescribing, switching and/or adapting drugs within the MRDP categories.

This program has been accredited for British Columbia pharmacists.

Requirements

The MRDP is designed to support BC Health Care Professionals in providing the most economic, safe and effective medications for their patients. Learners eligible to enroll in the MRDP include:

  • BC Prescribers (Physicians, Naturopaths, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Midwives, Dentists, Podiatrists, etc.)
  • BC Pharmacists

Doson Chua, BSc (Pharm), PharmD, BCPS (AQ)

Clinical Pharmacy Specialist — Cardiology, St. Paul’s Hospital
Clinical Professor — Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of British Columbia

Dr. Chua is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Cardiology at St Paul’s Hospital, Providence Health Care. He specializes in acute coronary syndromes and heart failure and has published in the area of antiplatelet and statin therapy.

He teaches in the UBC undergraduate and graduate PharmD programs and in the International Pharmacy Bridging program in the area of cardiology at UBC. He is a Clinical Professor in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC. He is also a lecturer with the University of Alberta PharmD for Pharmacist program and a lecturer in the Masters of Science in Clinical Pharmacy in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist with Added Qualifications in Cardiology from the Board of Pharmacy Specialties.

He is currently the Past President of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists BC Branch. He has published and presented pharmacy and cardiology related research and has won several teaching and practice awards.

Andrew P. Ignaszewski, MD, FRCPC

Clinical Professor — Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia

Dr Ignaszewski is head of the Division of Cardiology and medical director of the Healthy Heart Program at St. Paul's Hospital, and is affiliated with the hospital's Heart Transplantation Program and Heart Failure Program. He is also a clinical associate professor in the Division of Cardiology at the University of British Columbia. Dr Ignaszewski studied medicine in Poland, and enjoys fishing in his spare time.

Andrew Ignaszewski received his medical training in Poland. He arrived in Canada in 1983 and completed his Internal Medicine training at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia before moving to University of Alberta where he finished his Adult Cardiology training. In 1994, he was recruited for medical leadership of a premier cardiac rehabilitation and prevention program at St. Paul’s Hospital. Andrew is the Physician Program Director of the Heart Centre Program at St. Paul’s Hospital; a cardiologist with the Heart Function Clinic at St. Paul’s Hospital designed to look after all aspects of cardiac care for patients with congestive heart failure; and a Cardiologist with the Heart Transplant Program at St. Paul’s Hospital. Until November 1999, he was the Medical Director of the British Columbia Transplant Society. Andrew’s research interests are cardiac rehabilitation and prevention, heart failure and patient outcomes following various cardiovascular interventions. He has published 37 papers and 72 abstracts in these areas. He is also involved in the teaching of medical students and medical residents at St. Paul’s Hospital and has received teaching awards from the University of British Columbia.

Glenda MacDonald, BSP, ACPR, PharmD, RPh

Lecturer and Director — Division of Continuing Pharmacy Professional Development (CPPD), Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of British Columbia

Dr. Glenda MacDonald is the Director of Continuing Pharmacy Professional Development and Lecturer in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

During her 35 years as a pharmacist clinician and educator, Glenda has fulfilled leadership roles in the development and establishment of a number of innovative programs. She was the Director of Canada’s first Doctor of Pharmacy Program here at UBC, and remains committed to ensuring that pharmacists gain the knowledge and skills required for our rapidly changing profession.

Glenda completed her undergraduate pharmacy degree at the University of Saskatchewan, her Residency at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, and her Doctor of Pharmacy at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Boston.

Sheryl Peterson, BSc (Agr), BSc (Pharm), RPh

Lecturer and Associate Director — Division of Continuing Pharmacy Professional Development (CPPD), Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of British Columbia

Sheryl is the Associate Director of Continuing Pharmacy Professional Development (CPPD) and is a lecturer in Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia. She holds a BSc (Pharm), Diploma in Asthma Care and a Train the Trainer Certificate in the “Practical Administration of Injections for BC Pharmacists”. She has practiced in diverse roles within the Pharmacy profession including community pharmacy, regulatory oversight and pharmacy education. She has 15 years of experience developing, delivering, accrediting and evaluating pharmacy education programs in a variety of learning formats. She has served on numerous pharmacy and interdisciplinary committees and has been a presenter at regional, national and international conferences.

Asal Taheri, BSc (Pharm), ACPR

Lecturer and Coordinator — Office of Experiential Education, UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences
Clinical Pharmacy Specialist — Gastroenterology and Surgery, St. Paul’s Hospital

Asal Taheri is a Lecturer and Coordinator for the Office of Experiential Education at the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Prior to her current role, she was a clinical pharmacist in Gastroenterology and Surgery at St Paul’s Hospital, Providence Health Care.

Asal is an alumnus of the UBC Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy program. Upon graduation from the program, she continued onwards to complete the Lower Mainland Pharmacy Services Accredited Pharmacy Residency Program and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree through the University of Toronto.

Asal has had diverse experiences in both community and hospital pharmacy practice. Throughout her time as clinical pharmacist for the gastroenterology department, Asal contributed to the development and delivery of educational sessions for both the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the UBC Faculty of Medicine Gastroenterology Fellows.

Scott Whittaker, MD, FRCPC

Dr. Whittaker is a Clinical Assistant Professor. He is the Medical Director of the BC Home Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Program, a member of the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology and the American Gastroenterological Association. He is also an Examination Board Member for Gastroenterology for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
